When it comes to families, parents often spend a lot of time picking out names for siblings that will sound good together.
But there aren’t many who decide to name their children the exact same thing.
According to a post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, this is exactly what one woman wants to do, after becoming obsessed with her step-son’s name.
The post is written by the teenage step-son, who claims he has a unique name, which was the name of his grandfather on his late mother’s side.
The name is special to him because of this, but now his step-mum has decided she wants to use it for his half-brother.
The step-son, who is American, thinks this is a really “weird” thing to do and turned to the internet for some advice.
His post reads: “When I was born my parents named me Giuseppe after my grandpa on my mom’s side.
“My parents divorced when I was five, but my mom got sick when was 12 and passed away a year later so I had to go live full time with my dad.
“Two years ago my dad started dating Kailey until they got married. They found out they’re pregnant months ago and also learned it’s a boy. Ever since Kailey keeps saying she also wants her son to be named Giuseppe cause she likes the name so much and how it sounds.
“I straight up told her that’s my name and would be weird having my half bro having the exact same name as me.”
He continued to say that Kailey didn’t find it weird and pointed out he doesn’t “own the name”.
“She seemed really mad that I called it weird and said I should get used to it because that’s the name they’re deciding on.
“My dad backed her up at first but we talked a little more. I just told him it didn’t feel right for us two to have the exact same name and maybe that could be a middle name or something if she likes it so much.
“He talked to Kailey about changing it as a middle name so the first name can be something else but she just got more mad. Now she says I’m ruining this whole experience by making a big deal over a name.”
His dad now feels in the middle and Kailey is being “super cold” so he can’t tell if he’s in the wrong.
More than 2,000 people commented on his Reddit post, sharing their thoughts on the matter, with many agreeing it’s weird.
“Personally I find that really weird. I’m surprised your dad agreed to it at first,” replied one person.
Another said: “Call me cynical and hardened to toxic families, but my worst assumption is she wants to replace his kid that she likes less with a new one by the same name. She’s trying to cause a divide.”
A third wrote: “My friend was named Jason and his stepmother decided to name his baby brother Jason. His dad saw absolutely no problem with it. His stepmother started calling him by his mother’s last name instead (which was not his last name… he had his father’s last name). Well, I guess the stepmother got what she wanted because it’s been over 10 years and Jason (the original) refuses to talk to his father and any of his half-siblings.”
Someone else added: “It’s dismissive of the original Giuseppe. Literally. Dad should put a hard stop to this.”
