Hollywood legend Christopher Plummer has died at the age of 91.
The Oscar winner died peacefully at his home in Conneticut with his third wife Elaine Taylor by his side.
He is survived by Elaine and his only child, actress Amanda Plummer, from his first marriage to actress Tammy Grimes.
Lou Pitt, his friend and manager told Deadline in a statement: “Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words.
“He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”
The Canadian actor was born in Toronto, Canada in 1929 and was the son of John Orme Plummer, who sold stocks and securities, and Isabella Mary, a University secretary and granddaughter of Canadian Prime Minister Sir John Abbott.
Despite not attending college, Christopher had his film debut in Sidney Lumet’s Stage Struck in 1953.
Christopher’s breakout role came, however, in 1965 with his role as Captain Georg von Trapp in beloved 1965 musical The Sound of Music.
His role as the stern but loving father of the von Trapp children who resisted the Nazis has made him an iconic Hollywood figure.
Christopher also had major roles as Commodus in The Fall of the Roman Empire in 1964, the Duke of Wellington in Waterloo in 1970, as Rudyard Kipling in The Man Who Would Be King in 1975, and as Leo Tolstoy in 2009’s The Last Station.
Additionally he appeared in Spike Lee’s films Malcolm X and Inside Man, along with David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunnit Knives Out.
Plummer also memorably replaced Kevin Spacey at short notice as J. Paul Getty in Ridley Scott film All The Money in the World in 2017.
He later became the oldest actor to win an Academy Award at the age of 82 for his performance in 2010 film Beginners.
