I have long maintained my first choice for the commute to work and back would be a maxi-scooter.
Most “proper” motorcyclists wouldn’t give these small-wheeled, twist-and-go machines a second thought.
But for me and many others, especially our friends on the Continent, the maxi-scooter ticks all the right boxes in terms of reliability, comfort, fuel efficiency and rideability.
One of my favourites was Suzuki’s Burgman 650, which I have always given glowing reviews.
Unfortunately, in part due to Euro5 emissions issues, that model has now been discontinued.
The firm’s French spokesman Guillaume Vuillardot indicated back in February the range was under threat.
He said then: “Some vehicles will indeed disappear and others will arrive.
“The Burgman 400 will continue. The rest of the range will stop and we will have other types of vehicles to replace.”
What “other types” means we wait to find out, but one suspects a move to electric.
For the time being, the Burgman 400 remains – and a good thing, too.
Jump on board and the ride position is relaxed comfort itself.
The seat is wide and plush, the foot-boards offer various positions for your boots to rest, so more comfort for your legs, and there is good protection from the elements.
The engine is a little beauty, with an impressive 30bhp making it plenty pokey enough, even for extended motorway jaunts.
Around town, it’s perfect, with good mid-range torque, and the automatic gear box providing smooth, barely noticeable changes.
Not only that, but a pocket-friendly 70mpg is genuinely achievable, giving a range of 200 miles.
Handling is surprisingly good too, with a 15in front wheel and 13in rear providing excellent stability at speed, while still allowing for nippy around-town manoeuvrability.
There is even an adjustable shock.
The upswept screen does an excellent job of eliminating buffeting and there are LED lights all round.
The dash features two large, clear, round analogue clocks for speed and revs, with a digital screen in the centre showing all other info.
Underseat storage is spacious enough for two helmets and there are a couple of compartments at the front, plus a charging outlet.
Additional features include Suzuki’s immobiliser system, which uses an electronic ID system in the key and a cover that protects the ignition.
There’s also a parking brake and a chain lock “gate” which allows you to pass a chain around the frame to lock the bike to an immovable object.
All in all, the perfect commuter scooter.
