'My brother is fuming as I said his kid will be mercilessly teased for her name'

When naming your baby, you have to really think about what impact your choice will have on their life.

Are you picking a moniker that’s likely to cause them grief as they get older?

Most parents probably don’t see it that way, but it’s no secret that children can be incredibly cruel sometimes.

One man has recently tried to stop his brother and sister-in-law from making this kind of mistake with their daughter’s name.

In a post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, the unnamed man explained that he comes from an Indian family and that his wife had died.

He claims his brother, who is expecting a baby, wanted to honour his late sister-in-law by naming his child after her.

The wife’s name was Aanal, which the man says is a “beautiful” name in India, but the problem is that his brother doesn’t live in India. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

The post reads: “My older brother and sister in law are due with their first baby in the next few months. We’re an Indian family and they plan to name their child for my deceased wife, Aanal.

“Obviously, I completely feel for my SIL but I ended up saying that a name like Aanal wouldn’t work well in a country like America because of obvious reasons and the risk of mispronunciations.

“It’s a fine name in India and it’s beautiful (it means fire) but their daughter would just get mercifully bullied in America.”

He went on to say how when he is in America, he used an American name, that was different from his birth name and this is what he thought his brother should do for his daughter.

“I have an American name, I was called Aaron at school and Aadith at home. I got called A-A-Ron plenty of times throughout school and I don’t want my little niece to grow up and start being bullied, A-A-Ron was annoying to me, A-A-A-Nal is a million times worse.

“I’m an immigrant and when I’d go back to India in the summers, I went by Aadith and when I was in the USA for the rest of the year, I was Aaron. I had more opportunities and I was able to respect my heritage.”

However, when he suggested this to his sibling, they became furious.

He added: “They got super angry at me and said that they WOULD name her that and that I didn’t know what I was talking about (ironic because Aanal went by Annabeth), my sister-in-law said that she wouldn’t speak to me again until I legitimately apologized to her and meant it sincerely and I finally told her to not come complaining to me later on in the game.”

He then asked if he was wrong to have said all this and hundreds of people have since responded to the Reddit post, sharing their thoughts.

One person said: “The kid will be verbally tortured.”

Another replied: “That poor kid is in for it when she gets to school.”

A third wrote: “Kids are gonna get picked on no matter what, but Jesus, do her parents have to set her up as a target?”
