Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder has been handed a silver lining to weeks of being ill with Covid-19.
The 58-year-old ‘Madchester’ legend was bed bound with the virus, according to his friend Bez, who appeared on BBC Radio 6 Music Chris Hawkins show to discuss his new fitness regime to rival Joe Wicks, Get Buzzin’ With Bez.
Bez, whose real name is Mark Berry, said that one of the side effects of contracting coronavirus was that Shaun had started growing his hair back again, after years of having alopecia.
Speaking about how this had happened, Bez said: “Shaun, he got the Covid, he was really ill for three weeks.
“[He was] hallucinating of visitations, saying the aliens got him through it by coming down and visiting him – said he was completely off his head.”
Bez continued: “The only thing he could eat was fruit and you know he’s got alopecia and his hair has fallen out and because the only thing he could eat was fruit, his hair started to grow back.
“It’s unbelievable isn’t it. The Covid pandemic he will remember for his hair growing again.”
Shaun hasn’t been blessed with a full head of hair just yet, and Bez has said it is baby steps in that direction so far.
He continued: “The funny thing is that it’s like proper baby hair, little wisps and curls on it.
“If you can imagine Shaun as a cute little cuddly baby, then yeah [you get the picture].”
Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Bez revealed the reason why Shaun had alopecia in the first place, saying: “I don’t think he ever got proper nutrients through his body and he had had alopecia and his hair had fallen out.”
Bez added that he has now swapped up shaking his maracas for an interest in yoga: “I am starting with the basics. I have got a personal trainer who puts me through my passes.
“We are doing yoga as well.
“I cant wait to start yoga – I’ve never done yoga before so that should be really funny.”
