Woman shows off Christmas card from “toxic” mother-in-law but people are divided

There are no doubt some lucky people who don’t have a complicated relationship with their in-laws.

The majority of us, however, may admit that there are a few niggles when it comes to certain topics.

One woman left people divided after showing off the Christmas card she received from her mother-in-law.

Her video revealing the card and its contents has been viewed more than one million times on TikTok.

In the clip, she explained: “Toxic mother in law. Not the first time she’s done this.”

The card features two birds sitting on pine cones and says: “Season’s Greetings.”

In the clip, the woman claimed that her mother-in-law had sent her a card detailing how much money she had spent helping them with their bills.

Viewers were left divided over the video – as some people dubbed the card “selfish.”

In the video, the woman shared a video of her opening the card and said: “This is one toxic mother-in-law.

“So I just want to preface this video by saying that there is no way that you absolutely need to get a Christmas gift or need to give a Christmas gift.

“But my mother-in-law chooses to repetitively just do this type of behaviour to my husband

“Instead of just saying she can’t afford a gift, or that she’s given more than enough this last year

“She’ll send a card and the card will say ‘Merry Christmas, received a big blanket, $112.40 for Xfinity bill paid, $584.89 for an electric bill, $697.29 and a gift. Merry Christmas.'”

“So basically she’ll say ‘Hey throughout the year I’ve done things for you guys.

“And y’know she did those things when we lost our jobs due to Covid so that was really amazing.

But she chooses to send a card basically reminding us ‘hey you don’t get a gift because I did all these other things when she literally just could…I don’t know…not give us one or just wish us a merry Christmas.”

The video has racked up 119,000 likes and nearly 4,000 comments since being uploaded.

One viewer fumed: “That’s not a Christmas card, that’s an invoice.”

Another added: “Don’t help someone if you are going to hold it over them and remind them or use it every chance you get.

“Exactly why I don’t take money from my in-laws.”

A third agreed, commenting: “No this is absolutely petty.

“If she didn’t want to help them then don’t but you don’t do things for ppl so you can then send the receipts in lieu of a gift.”

But others disagreed, with one person asking: “But why is she paying your bills in the first place???

“She might feel y’all are toxic for her supporting you and you still expecting a gift.”

Another blasted: “I wouldn’t expect a gift if my MIL paid my bills…”

A third commented: “Toxic seems a bit much when she supported you in your hard times.

“Might not be that cool to put it in the card but she might be trying to make sure.”
